It is hard to know where to start with this report, as this was by far the best result in SSKI’s long history. It is the culmination of a lot of hard work by the coaches of the Association and the spirit that has been instilled into all of our competitors by the coaches and instructors in SSKI. Twelve gold medals is just utterly amazing and I have to say that Adam Cockfield sensei was just a joy to watch and took an unbelievable four gold medals in the four hardest categories of the day, the senior men’s kumite and kata individual events and the team kata and mixed team kumite events. What an inspiration to all of our competitors and the praise showered on him by the many different coaches, instructors and competitors on the day from a host of excellent Shotokan Associations, including our great friends from SEKU was well deserved indeed. ‘Male Competitor of the Day’ by a million miles and winner of the special samurai trophy.

Adam is by far the best all–round competitor that SSKI has ever produced and when you consider our past record that is no mean feat indeed. He is a joy to watch and his great attitude and true sportsmanship is a template for all up–and–coming karateka. Our team kata performances were out of this world where we took all three gold medals in these categories. The mixed team kumite was one of the most exciting events of the day with an amazing amount of teams in this category from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland; to win this event was a huge triumph for the SSKI ‘A’ team and an event where we also took third place. The standard and spirit of all of our competitors was a joy to behold and I personally am very, very proud of you all.

I would like to finish with what may seem like a big–headed remark but is most certainly not meant to be. As I was waiting for my lift home with Jeff Carson (in his flash new car) and his family, I was stood outside the Leisure Centre with Dougie Carson when a senior black–belt from another very good Shotokan Association ran up to me and congratulated me personally on our wonderful day’s performance. He shook my hand and said he had never seen a performance quite like it in all of his competition and karate experience and stated that no matter what events were on show, individual kata or kumite, team kata or kumite, children or adults, and, more importantly, our general attitude was just unbelievable. He said he had heard lots about me (most of it good, I hope) but then just shook my hand and said that all he had heard was very obviously true and that the Association must have an absolutely excellent Chief Instructor to create a performance like the one he had just witnessed. Isn’t that wonderful? But let me just finish with the real truth: I could not have done any of this without the unbelievable help of Adam Cockfield sensei, Tony Bunting sensei and all of my wonderful instructors and Chief Referee, Jeff Carson, and, of course, to all of the competitors on the day. You made your Chief Instructor a very happy man and I am proud of you all. But blimey, wasn’t it a long day!!!
